Meet Greta.
What made you consider nursing as a program of study?
I first started thinking about nursing when I worked as a lifeguard for about five years. I really liked helping people, especially in stressful situations, and being someone others could rely on. I realized I wanted a career where I could take care of people every day, be hands-on, and make a difference, which is what drew me to nursing.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
One of the main reasons I chose WVU was because you start clinicals early, in the fall of sophomore year, which a lot of other schools don’t offer. I also liked the smaller clinical groups because it made it easier to learn and ask questions. Doing my clinicals at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital was a big plus too since it’s a Level 1 trauma center, so I got to see a lot of different types of patients and situations. It just felt like a place where I could really grow.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
A really positive experience for me was my time on the oncology floor during clinicals. I got to build strong relationships with patients and their families, and it showed me how important it is to care for people not just medically, but emotionally too. Those moments really stuck with me and helped shape the kind of nurse I want to be.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
I would tell myself to not stress so much and trust that everything will work out. Nursing school can feel like a lot at first, but you learn more than you think over time. I’d also say to ask more questions and take advantage of every opportunity.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to work as a Pediatric ICU nurse.
How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?
I think WVU prepared me really well by giving me real-life clinical experiences that helped build my confidence. I feel more comfortable with my skills and talking to patients and families. Outside of academics, I also loved being part of the WVU community, like going to game days, meeting new people, and making lasting memories with friends, which helped me grow as a person and feel ready for the next chapter!
