Meet Alexis O.
What made you consider nursing as a program of study?
From a young age, I knew I wanted to work in the medical field, though I wasn’t sure in what role. In high school, I explored this interest through courses like anatomy and physiology and foundations of healthcare. My passion was also shaped by my own experience with childhood cancer, which immersed me in the healthcare system and gave me a unique perspective.
As I considered my future profession, I reflected on the members of the healthcare team who had the greatest impact on me. I realized that nurses played some of the most meaningful roles in my journey. They not only provided care, but also helped me feel safe, supported, and understood. Because of their compassion and presence, I learned not to fear my circumstances, but to trust the process and accept my new reality. This ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in nursing.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
I chose WVU School of Nursing because of its proximity to my house, so I could commute, the financial advantages, and scholarship opportunities.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
While I have had many positive experiences, one that stands out is receiving an award from the college. During the introduction, hearing the staff share such kind and meaningful remarks about me as a student was incredibly impactful. It made any doubts I had about my ability to be a good nurse feel insignificant and gave me the final push to continue pursuing this path with assurance.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
I would tell my freshman self, “Do not doubt your capacity for learning and ask questions when needed.” I was so intimidated by taking prerequisite classes, such as chemistry, that I had not taken in high school. This led me to change my major in my first semester and ultimately cost me a year of extra classes that did not count toward my nursing degree.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to study for the NCLEX and acquire a job over the summer.
How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?
WVU prepared me for my next chapter by applying lecture topics to real-life scenarios and giving me the opportunity to practice clinical skills in the skills lab and during clinical rotations.
Anything else you’d like to add?
The staff for the School of Nursing at Potomac State College are all amazing professors and mentors. I am blessed to have had the experience I did during my nursing school journey and owe part of my success in completing the program to the incredible professors and administrators.
