Meet Maggie.

What made you consider nursing as a program of study?

I grew up in a family of medical professionals who always inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. I have always been drawn to helping people, and that’s what this career is all about. It’s such a vulnerable time in some people’s lives, and being there to support them and provide care is such an amazing feeling.

Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?  

I never questioned what college I wanted to go to, especially being from the area. WVU School of Nursing has such a good reputation and a supportive environment that truly wants you to succeed. As I talked to nursing students before entering college, I could tell this was the right place for me to grow as a student and a future nurse.

Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?

Looking back on the past 4 years, I had many positive experiences, but my favorite would be my leadership placement. I was placed in the Children’s Hospital on a pediatric floor and developed a special bond with many of my patients and families, especially the oncology patients. They spend days to months with us, so they become family. Building a trusting relationship with them in such a difficult time is very special.

What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?

Some advice I would give my freshman self is to take it day by day. I would tell myself to not stress so much about getting everything figured out right away. Always show up and be willing to learn and provide care for your patients.

What are your plans after graduation?

I have already accepted a job in the beautiful, new WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital on an inpatient pediatric floor. I plan on working there for several years to gain valuable experience before going back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner specializing in Pediatrics.

How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?

WVU prepared me for my next chapter by giving me real-world experience at the teaching hospital and a strong foundation in the classroom. I’ve grown both professionally and personally, and the friendships I’ve made here will stay with me for life. I’m leaving confident and ready for what’s ahead.

I am very appreciative of the faculty and staff who shaped me into the nurse I am today. They were always willing to help and guide me in the right direction.
