What made you consider nursing as a program of study?

I realized early on in my life that I had a tendency and desire to “heal.” In other words, I really enjoyed being there for other people, and cared a whole lot about my friends and family, and still do to this day. Sometimes, I care too much! Nursing was a field that gave me the opportunity to share some of this love and compassion for others and be a part of their healing journey, which is the most rewarding aspect of nursing.

Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?

WVU School of Nursing was where my aunt went to school and became a nurse practitioner. I've always looked up to her, and seen her as one of the “smartest” and most “careful” and genuine people in my life. I knew I wanted to go here because WV is my home and it is where she grew to be successful. WVU SON was an optimal choice due to its efforts in caring for their student experiences, learning, and education in the field of nursing. Another amazing factor is that the hospital we are affiliated with is a teaching hospital, and I have had an amazing experience and am fortunate for this reason.

Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?

I have many! But the most positive experiences I have had tend to be because of the faculty. Within the clinical settings, our professors are so eager for us to learn. You are present, they are present, and you truly do see how much someone can care for you and your success as a student. It feels like family here and I know I can always talk to my teachers.

What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?

To stop worrying so much about the future, and to please take things a day at a time. It goes by so fast; “Stop and smell the roses!” is one of my favorite quotes by Mac Davis. To any freshman student, please take a moment to enjoy your journey, because each is different! You can do it!

What are your plans after graduation?

To start my new job as a Labor and Delivery nurse at WVU Medicine Children’s, where I found my heart in nursing! I hope to continue my care with mom’s and babies!

How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?

It has truly set me up for success in my career by 3 main ways that I define and have learned about in nursing: Communication, Collaboration, and Compassion; WVU really focuses on relationships and building a strong system that supports one another. I feel like WVU has fortified these skill sets for me.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I just wanted to say thank you to WVU SON. Especially my professors/clinical instructors. I really do appreciate your all’s kindness and support, and I know I wouldn't have been able to do it without you all.
