Application Information

The ABSN program is an accelerated program for college graduates who wish to become a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree in nursing. It is designed for full time study. After 18 months of continuous enrollment, successful students obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and are eligible to take the licensing examination for registered professional nurse (RN).

A new cohort of students begin this program in January on the first day of the spring semester. Applications are reviewed in the order in which they are received beginning in March for the cohort that begins the following January.

  2. Minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all college work attempted.
  3. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the pre-requisite courses.
  4. Completion of each of the prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or better, prior to enrollment. Students who are completing certain prerequisite courses may be offered admission; however, the offer will be rescinded if the courses are not completed prior to the first day of classes.
  5. If transferring from another Nursing program, a statement of good standing from program in which currently enrolled.
  6. Applicants with a GPA of below 3.0 may be considered for provisional admission on a case-by-case basis. Consideration for provisional admission may include the number of seats available in the program and the number of hours completed in previous degree programs. Once admitted, students must maintain a program GPA of at least 3.0. Students who do not maintain a program GPA of at least 3.0 will be placed on academic notice for two semesters. Students who do not raise their program GPA to at least 3.0 after two semesters on academic notice will be dismissed from the WVU SON.

To be considered, applicants will be required to meet all WVU admission requirements in addition to program-specific admission criteria.

Note: Students who have been dismissed from any nursing program (WVU or otherwise) are ineligible for admission to any of the WVU BSN programs; however, students who have received degrees or additional credentialing post-academic dismissal from a nursing program are eligible for admission to the ABSN to RN, RN to BSN, or graduate programs provided that they meet all other admission requirements and based on space available. Students who have withdrawn from the WVU SON may be considered for readmission and may apply in accordance with guidelines and criteria found in the undergraduate handbook.

Acceptance

Applicants accepted to the program can expect to receive an acceptance letter after the application has been processed and evaluated by the department. Specific information regarding completion of degree, overall grade point average, receipt of official transcripts and date for confirmation of seat in the program will be outlined in the acceptance letter. The acceptance letter also will provide information of forthcoming clinical requirements and required background check that must be completed by the specified date to keep your seat in the program.

In programs with limited capacity and competitive admissions, the most qualified students are selected among those that meet the minimum requirements. Students who want to appeal the Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Committee decision as unfair, arbitrary, or capricious may contact the Director of Admissions and Enrollment for the School of Nursing. The request will be forwarded to the committee for consideration, and the student will receive detailed information regarding the formal appeal process.
