Applications now being accepted for nursing post master’s certificate programs in psychiatric mental health and adult-gerontology acute care

Advanced practice nurses who have earned a master's degree or higher in nursing can now apply to two post-masters certificate programs offered by WVU: the Psychiatric Mental Health and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care nurse practitioner programs.

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) was approved in December 2020 by the WVU Board of Governors. The program prepares advanced practice nurses to meet the needs for advanced psychiatric mental health nursing care in their communities. Graduates of this program will meet all requirements to sit for national certification in psychiatric mental health.

The 21-25 credit hour program will be taught online with a requirement of at least 500 clinical hours in the psychiatric mental health advanced practice role.

The WVU School of Nursing introduced in 2020 its Adult-Gerontology Acute Care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) program. The AGACNP is available to currently licensed and certified family, adult or gerontology primary care nurse practitioners who have at least two years of experience in direct patient care in an advanced practice role.

The 16-21 credit hour program is taught online and requires 500 clinical hours in the acute care advanced practice role. Graduates of the post-APRN certificate program will be able to sit for the adult-gerontology acute care national certification exam.

Applications for both programs are being accepted until May 1, 2021.
