In November, observed as Rural Health Month, two WVU Health Sciences faculty members were recognized by The Center for Rural Health Development, West Virginia Office of Rural Health and West Virginia Rural Health Association for their dedication to improving health and healthcare in rural communities.
Dr. Angel Smothers, associate dean for community engagement at the WVU School of Nursing, recently joined the board of directors at Wellspring of Greenbrier, a nonprofit organization that has provided food, clothing, and other basic necessities to disadvantaged, unhoused, and transient populations in Southern West Virginia for over two decades.
To Angela Jeffries, a WVU School of Nursing lecturer and certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), Africa was a bucket list destination. When she was offered the opportunity to travel to Africa on a mission trip, which was something she had always wanted to do as well, she couldn’t say no.

During the summer, eight WVU School of Nursing faculty members completed the STEPS Simulation Certification Program. The certification, offered by the WVU David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS), is designed for instructors with interest in quality teaching with simulation.
