As part of its most valuable texts of the year for 2023, the American Journal of Nursing named Middle Range Theory for Nursing as its first place winner in the category of nursing research. The textbook was edited by WVU School of Nursing faculty members Drs. Mary Jane Smith and Roger Carpenter, and five chapters of the book were written by WVU Nursing faculty.
The reviewer said of the textbook, “Middle Range Theory for Nursing is an essential guide to furthering the development and application of nursing science for all nurse scholars, whether engaged in research, education, or clinical practice.” They continued, “This text provides an accessible overview of theory generation within nursing, from the philosophical to the theoretical and empirical. It clearly describes the direct linkage and applicability of middle range theories to research and practice.”
Chapters in the book written by faculty from the School of Nursing include the following:
- Chapter 5: Theory of Meaning by Teresa Ritchie and Suzy Walter
- Chapter 11: Story Theory by Mary Jane Smith
- Chapter 17: Theory of Moral Reckoning by Alvita Nathaniel
- Chapter 22: Transforming Loss: A Developing Concept for Nursing by Brad Phillips
- Chapter 24: Application of Middle Range Theory: Education by Roger Carpenter
“This award demonstrates recognition by a community of nursing scholars regarding the value of the theoretical basis of nursing for teaching, practice and research,” Dr. Smith said. “The importance of coming to know the unique body of nursing knowledge is applicable to all levels of students in all nursing programs.”
