The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness in collaboration with the Division of Student Life recently sponsored Mental Health First Aid instructor training, an evidence-based training that teaches participants about mental health and substance use issues.

“WVU is taking action to expand mental health resources for students, faculty, and staff,” Dean of Students Corey Farris said. “Through Mental Health First Aid, we can engage our community to identify and provide support to Mountaineers who may be at risk.”

Participants learn to apply skills that include assessing for suicide or harm, listening non-judgmentally, giving reassurance and information, and encouraging professional help and self-help strategies. The information will be presented by WVU’s certified instructors in a variety of formats, including virtual, blended and in-person as pandemic protocols allow.

“By supporting instructor training, we are able to call on individuals across the University system to share this information widely,” Vice President for Health Promotion and Wellness Tara Hulsey said.
