Research Sites

 

Research for the ICVACP grant will be conducted at WVU Hospitals and the West Virginia University Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, which is comprised of five schools – Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health. It is home to more than 1,000 faculty members, and is committed to education, research, service, and patient care. The five health schools share a common goal: to educate the next generation of healthcare providers, bio-medical researchers, and health policy leaders for West Virginia.

 

 

West Virginia University School of Nursing 

The West Virginia University School of Nursing was authorized by an act of the WV Legislature in 1951 and has been in existence since 1960, offering cutting edge educational programs from baccalaureate through doctoral education in nursing. Clinically expert faculty are engaged in teaching and research to improve quality of life and promote health for the citizens of the rural state, and in service initiatives including health promotion in the public schools and identifying the nursing workforce needs of north-central WV. The School has three departments: the Charleston department, located in Charleston, WV, the Morgantown department located in Morgantown, WV, and the West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), located in Montgomery, WV. The Morgantown Department, organized under a department Chair (with assistance from 3 Vice-chairs and program coordinators), and located on the main campus in Morgantown, will assume responsibility for the project.

 

 

West Virginia University School of Medicine 

The WVU School of Medicine was established with a 4-year curriculum in 1960, having provided a formal 2-year basic science curriculum dating back to 1912 and graduated its first class in 1962. In 2012, the School of Medicine was ranked #81 out of 138 medical schools in NIH funding (Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research) and #3 for rural health by US News; it is poised for substantive growth in its research missions appropriate for its size and the state it serves. The departments of surgery (cardiothoracic surgery) and medicine (general internal medicine and geriatrics), large departments with education, research and clinical missions, will participate in this application.

 

 

West Virginia University School of Pharmacy 

The WVU School of Pharmacy was established in as the Department of Pharmacy in 1914 and has grown to become ranked at No. 26 in the country. The school’s academic programs are Pre-Pharmacy, PharmD. and Ph.D. as well as a robust continuing education program. The Health Education Center and “My First Patient” program gives WVU student pharmacists valuable insights and prepares them to more effectively practice. The School is a leader in pharmacy education with curricula designed to prepare graduates for dynamic careers in pharmacy, pharmaceutical research, health outcomes research, and related fields. The pharmacy faculty is composed of excellent researchers who strive daily to improve the quality of life for patients and to discover new therapeutic modalities. The department of Clinical Pharmacy, whose mission is to provide continuity and stability with a clear definition of collaborative roles will participate in this application.

 

 

WVU Hospitals 

WVU Hospitals (WVUH) is comprised of WVUH, Chestnut Ridge Hospital, a behavioral medicine psychiatry facility, and Children’s Hospital. The main hospital campus also includes a Physician Office Center, state-of-the-art Cancer Center and WVU Eye Institute. WVU Hospitals cares for nearly 30,000 patients each year from all the 55 WV counties, all 50 states and 16 countries and in 2005 attained and remains the only Magnet designated hospital in the state of WV. In August 2012, WVUH was named the #1 Hospital in West Virginia according to U.S. News & World Report in their annual Hospital Rankings 2012-2013, including High Performing in 12 of the 16 Best Hospital categories. WVU Hospitals is part of West Virginia University Healthcare, a not-for profit corporation operating the teaching hospitals of West Virginia University. WVU Hospitals is a tertiary referral center and serves as the principle clinical education and research site for the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center.
