Participation and involvement in professional nursing organizations keeps our faculty, students and graduates in tune with today's complex healthcare environment. A list of the various professional nursing organizations in West Virginia and across the country are listed below.

American Association of Critical Care Nurses

American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACCN) is the largest specialty nursing organization in the world, representing the interests of more than 500,000 nurses who are charged with the responsibility of caring for acutely and critically ill patients. The Association is dedicated to providing our members with the knowledge and resources necessary to provide optimal care to critically ill patients.

American Association of Colleges of Nursing

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is the national voice for baccalaureate and graduate nursing education. AACN works to establish quality standards for nursing education; assists schools in implementing those standards; influences the nursing profession to improve health care; and promotes public support for professional nursing education, research and practice.

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners

On January 1, 2013, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (founded in 1985) and the American College of Nurse Practitioners (founded in 1995) came together to form  the American Association of Nurse Practitioners™ (AANP),  the largest full-service national professional membership organization for NPs of all specialties.

As The Voice of the Nurse Practitioner®, AANP represents the interests of the approximately 189,000 NPs around the country, advocating for the active role of NPs as providers of high-quality, cost-effective and comprehensive patient-centered healthcare.

American Nurses Association

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation's 3.1 million registered nurses through its constituent and state nurses associations and its organizational affiliates. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.

West Virginia Nurses Association

The West Virginia Nurses Association (WVNA) is a Constituent Member of the American Nurses Association.

West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses

The RN Board is established by the West Virginia Legislature to promote and protect public health, safety, and welfare through the regulation of registered professional nurses and dialysis technicians.

WVU Student Nurses' Association

The WVU Student Nurses' Association (SNA) is an organization within WVU Student Engagement and Leadership. Faculty advise, but students initiate and direct the activities and meetings. There are monthly meetings and frequent activities that help the community and build friendships.

Membership provides access to the SNA SOLE site where you can view the calendar, meeting notes, upcoming events, surveys, etc. Facebook and WVU SON links.

Sign Up Information/Dues

Joining is easy. Complete and return the membership form (available at orientation or by picking one up at Christy Barnhart's office - 3015 or Jane Dailey's office - 3014. You can also join anytime by contacting Christy Barnhart, faculty advisor (office 3015) or call 304-293-5902 to request a form. Annual membership dues are $20.00.
